This might surprise you, but a cardboard box lined with newspaper is better than a standard soft cat bed as a birthing place; there's just less risk of injury for the kittens. You've probably noticed your little ones like to do a lot of exploring, and the high sides of the box keep them safe for the time being.

You'd expect the average litter to number between 1 and 5. However many kittens you have, you'll notice their mother spends a lot of her time cleaning and grooming them.

It's not time for your kitten to say goodbye to her mum and depend on you fully just yet, but it won't hurt to get her used to being handled.

Grooming begins, and with it a bit more independence. Your little ones will start to clean themselves instinctively, but, as you can see, they're not quite experts at this age. Luckily Mum's always on hand to help out.

Now that your kittens aren't so dependent on their mum for warmth, it's fine for you to pick them up and give them a cuddle every now and then.

After about four weeks your kittens will start to develop their ability to move about, and you'll really see the inner explorer coming to the surface.

After four weeks, your kittens will probably start to sniff and play with food, but they won't eat any just yet.
